Functional Rhinoplasty

Unlike aesthetic rhinoplasty, which focuses on improving the appearance of the nose, functional rhinoplasty primarily restores or improves the physiological functions of the nose, such as normal airflow and proper patency of the nasal passages.

Indications for functional rhinoplasty

This type of rhinoplasty may be performed in cases of:

• Chronic nasal conditions;

• Deviated nasal septum;

• Nasal injuries;

• Enlarged nasal turbinates;

• Polyps or cysts;

• A wide or high nasal bridge;

• Asymmetry;

• A nasal hump;

• A drooping nasal tip, depressions, or irregularities;

• Complications following previous surgery.

Contraindications to functional rhinoplasty

This procedure is generally not performed in cases of:

• Infectious diseases;

• Diabetes mellitus;

• Cancer;

• Poor blood clotting;

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding;

• Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS;

• Mental disorders.

Age is also taken into consideration — such procedures are generally not performed before the age of 18 due to incomplete development of the facial skeleton.

How is functional rhinoplasty performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Before the surgery, the following tests are required laboratory tests:

• Complete blood count (CBC);

• HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and syphilis tests;

• Blood glucose test;

• ECG (electrocardiogram);

• ALT/AST liver enzyme tests.
