Micro-maxillary sinusotomy

Indications for micro-maxillary sinusotomy

Micro-maxillary sinusotomy may be recommended for the following conditions:

• Chronic maxillary sinusitis that does not respond to medication;

• Polyps and cysts in the maxillary sinuses;

• Infections or inflammation that prevent normal drainage of mucus from the sinuses;

• Recurrent exacerbations of sinusitis despite conservative treatment.

How is micro-maxillary sinusotomy performed?

Before the procedure, the patient must have a consultation with an ENT surgeon. After reviewing the necessary test results, the doctor determines whether the patient is suitable for the surgical procedure. If everything is in order, the operation is performed under either local or general anesthesia.

The surgeon makes a small incision in the nasal cavity to access the maxillary sinus. Through this opening, inflamed tissue or the contents of the sinus are removed. The sinus opening (ostium) may also be enlarged to improve drainage.

At the end of the procedure, drainage tubes may be placed to facilitate the removal of fluid from the sinuses.

Rehabilitation

We strongly recommend following all instructions provided by your treating physician. After the postoperative period, usually involving 1–2 days of observation at the clinic, the patient is discharged. Further treatment is carried out at home with periodic follow-up visits to an ENT specialist.

Patients are usually prescribed antibiotics to prevent infections, along with regular nasal irrigation using saline solution.

After the surgery, some discomfort may occur, including nasal congestion and mild pain. These symptoms usually subside within several days.

If the patient notices any deterioration, such as an infection, bleeding, recurrent sinus inflammation, difficulty breathing through the nose due to scarring, or other concerning symptoms, they should contact their doctor immediately. Timely medical attention can help prevent more serious complications.
