Отопластика
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the shape, size, and position of the ears.
Types of Otoplasty
The human ear consists of cartilage, which is manipulated by surgeons, and the skin covering the cartilage. The main types of otoplasty include:
Aesthetic otoplasty. Also known as cosmetic otoplasty. The procedure is performed through an incision at the base of the ear, after which the cartilage is dissected to make the necessary adjustments, such as removing or folding it in the required direction. The incision is then closed with sutures in a way that keeps the scar as inconspicuous as possible.
Thread correction can also be considered a separate type of aesthetic otoplasty — thread otoplasty. The correction is performed without a scalpel. Special medical threads are inserted to correct existing imperfections.
Reconstructive otoplasty. This type is used to correct significant defects, such as deformities of the ear. In some cases, a person may be born with a congenital abnormality or an underdeveloped ear. Similar defects can also occur as a result of accidents or other traumatic situations. Ear reconstruction is used to correct such defects.
Reconstructive otoplasty can, in turn, be divided into the following types:
Scalpel otoplasty. This is a traditional method in which the tissues are incised using a scalpel. Recovery may take longer.
Laser otoplasty. A modern approach in which the incisions are made using a laser. This can help reduce blood loss and the duration of the procedure and may contribute to a faster recovery.
Radiofrequency otoplasty. This method is not yet widely used. It works in a similar way to laser treatment, while recovery may be significantly faster.
Depending on the type of procedure, otoplasty may be performed under general anesthesia. After the procedure, the patient may also need to wear a dressing or headband. At Expert Medical Clinic, highly qualified plastic surgeons provide recommendations for postoperative care.
Indications for Otoplasty
This procedure may be recommended for patients with:
Protruding ears;
Ear asymmetry;
Abnormally sized earlobes;
Deformity or complete or partial absence of the auricles.
It is also worth noting that the procedure may be recommended to correct the results of an improperly performed operation by a previous surgeon.
Contraindications to Ear Plastic Surgery
The procedure should not be performed in the presence of:
Endocrine system disorders;
Cancer;
HIV/AIDS;
Diabetes mellitus;
Pregnancy;
Preschool age.
Preparation for Surgery
The first step is to consult a doctor. After an examination, if surgical intervention is considered necessary, the doctor will refer the patient for laboratory tests. Once all the required tests have been completed, the ear plastic surgery procedure can be performed.
