Tympanostomy tube placement
Tympanostomy tube placement is a surgical procedure used to restore the normal function of the middle ear and prevent conditions such as otitis media, as well as to improve hearing. The procedure involves placing a special tube (a small ventilation tube) into the eardrum to allow excess fluid or air to drain from the middle ear.
Indications for tympanostomy tube placement
Tympanostomy tube placement may be recommended for:
Chronic otitis media, especially when fluid is present;
Otitis media with effusion — fluid accumulation in the middle ear;
Barotrauma — middle ear injury caused by sudden changes in pressure;
Eustachian tube dysfunction;
Complications following infections.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia; general anesthesia is used less frequently. To insert the tube, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eardrum and places the tube into it.
The tube may be left in place temporarily or permanently, depending on the individual case and the patient's needs. The tube (drainage device) allows fluid and pus to drain from the middle ear.
The procedure can improve hearing by normalizing pressure in the middle ear, preventing infections, improving Eustachian tube function, and reducing inflammation.
Postoperative period
Patients usually stay at the clinic for 1–2 days after surgery. Further treatment and recovery take place at home according to the doctor's recommendations.
For several days, patients may experience pain or a feeling of fullness in the ear. After surgery, the ear should be kept dry for several weeks, and visits to baths, saunas, and swimming pools should be avoided. Regular follow-up appointments with an otolaryngologist are required throughout the rehabilitation period.
Possible complications include infection, blockage of the tube, eardrum perforation, and hearing loss if the tube is improperly positioned. Therefore, it is important to follow all precautions and consult a doctor immediately if any concerning symptoms occur.
