At Avon, we believe in the beauty of good deeds, filled with a spark of possibility and driven by a shared vision of a fairer world where progress, equality and sustainability thrive. This is at the heart of our commitment to animal welfare and our determination to be a strong voice against animal testing for cosmetic products.
Today marks an important milestone in our journey: we are delighted to announce that all Avon beauty and personal care products have been approved as cruelty-free under the Leaping Bunny Programme. The programme is the globally recognised gold standard for cruelty-free products, and Avon’s approval as a global beauty brand is part of its partnership with Cruelty Free International, first announced in July 2023.
Christophe Neirynck, CEO of Avon, adds: “After three decades of working to end animal testing in cosmetics, we are proud to have reached this milestone and received Leaping Bunny approval. This achievement reflects our belief that beauty should be cruelty-free and our longstanding commitment to making the world a better place for everyone.”
As the first global beauty company to stop testing our products on animals in every country where we operate, we have been at the forefront of the beauty industry’s efforts to oppose animal testing for three decades, while ensuring the safety, quality and efficacy of our products.
Over the years, we have joined forces with organisations working to drive positive change in animal testing for cosmetics, including the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), FRAME, Humane Society International and PETA. In December 2019, PETA recognised us with its “Working for Legislative Change” award — a prestigious acknowledgement of our achievements in developing, validating and advancing the adoption of non-animal testing methods across the beauty industry.
The first Avon products to receive Leaping Bunny approval were Fragrance, Avon Care and Anew, which received Leaping Bunny approval in summer 2023, and work to include all categories has continued. The scale of the work was enormous: it involved reviewing more than 8,000 raw materials and engaging suppliers for more than 4,000 raw materials, which is why Avon adopted a phased approach.
Expanding the power of your choice
We know that our representatives and customers are eager to help bring an end to animal testing in the beauty industry. Following the old cliché, actions speak louder than words. That is why it is important to demonstrate our commitment and tell you how our efforts to support animal welfare are delivering results.
The Leaping Bunny Programme does exactly that: it provides robust assurance that we are doing everything possible to avoid cruelty, while independent auditing ensures that we consistently adhere to strict global criteria. Now that all Avon product ranges have been approved, we are proud to continue demonstrating our commitment to delivering products that exceed customer expectations, without compromising animal welfare, safety standards or regulatory requirements.
A tour of the leaping Bunny Programme
Cruelty Free International’s global Leaping Bunny Programme requires cruelty-free standards that go beyond legal requirements. It is the gold standard for cosmetics, personal care and household products.
The programme provides the strongest assurance that a brand has made a genuine commitment to helping end animal testing. Before receiving approval — and therefore permission to display the Leaping Bunny logo — brands must meet strict criteria. The programme requires brands to implement a supplier monitoring system and trace their supply chain all the way to the manufacturers of ingredients, as well as undergo independent audits to ensure ongoing compliance.
Michelle Thew, CEO of Cruelty Free International, comments: “It has been an incredible journey for Avon to achieve Leaping Bunny approval, and I am delighted that its entire product range is now confirmed as cruelty-free. It has been wonderful to work with Avon to help end animal testing and to welcome such a global brand and household name into the Leaping Bunny family. I look forward to our continued partnership to help end animal testing.”
