Cardiology is a branch of medicine that studies diseases of the heart and blood vessels and is also involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions. A cardiologist specializes in disorders of the cardiovascular system.
Who is a cardiologist?
A cardiologist is a physician specializing in diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including arrhythmias, tachycardia, hypertension and hypotension, coronary artery disease, weakening of the heart muscle, heart attacks and strokes, disorders of the heart chambers, and other cardiovascular problems. Cardiologists diagnose these conditions using ECGs, heart ultrasound (echocardiography), stress tests, and other diagnostic methods.
What are the most common heart problems?
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an inadequate blood supply to the heart muscle. The heart (myocardium) does not receive enough oxygen and nutrients, which leads to impaired blood flow. This can subsequently result in a heart attack, chronic heart failure, and other complications.
Arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm: the heart may beat too fast, too slowly, or irregularly. Arrhythmias can occur due to sinus tachycardia, bradycardia, abnormalities in the conduction of electrical impulses within the heart, or combined rhythm disorders.
Hypertension is high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure places additional strain on the heart and can impair its function. Without proper control, the risk of heart failure increases.
Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump blood effectively enough to deliver the required amount of oxygen to the body. One of the most common symptoms is shortness of breath. Swelling (edema) can also be a sign of the condition. Symptoms vary from person to person, so a thorough examination is necessary, including an ECG and echocardiogram.
Cardiomyopathy is a disorder of the structure and function of the heart muscle. It can often lead to heart failure.
Common symptoms of heart disease
Each heart condition has its own symptoms. Recognizing even one warning sign can be a reason to see a doctor and receive timely treatment.
Pay attention to:
shortness of breath;
chest pain;
fatigue;
rapid pulse;
high blood pressure;
dizziness.
If these symptoms occur repeatedly, do not delay seeking medical attention. Consult a cardiologist, who will perform an examination and, if necessary, refer you for an ECG and echocardiogram.
Prevention of cardiovascular diseases
Healthy diet (less fat, salt, and sugar);
Regular physical activity (at least 150 minutes per week);
Stress reduction;
Avoiding smoking and alcohol;
Regular medical check-ups.
