In today's digital age, the widespread presence of social media is undeniable. From becoming an easy way to stay connected with friends and family to serving as a constant source of entertainment and a primary destination for the latest news, online platforms keep us connected to the world around us—and their influence continues to grow to this day.

The impact of social media has also extended into the world of plastic surgery, where everyone, from patients and doctors to researchers, actively participates in or observes developments through their favorite social media channels. One platform that has experienced meteoric growth in recent years is TikTok.
Once perceived as a platform where teenagers posted dance videos or showed off their everyday outfits, TikTok has rapidly become a leading source of information—and misinformation—for people around the world interested in learning more about aesthetic medicine.
To better understand TikTok's influence and how it is helping shape the future of this field, we spoke with Expert Medical Clinic's leading surgeons, Ulugbek Muslimov and Farrukh Miyliyev, to hear their perspectives.
The Connection Between TikTok and Plastic Surgery Trends
The relationship between TikTok and plastic surgery trends has contributed to noticeable shifts in the field. Specialists can observe changes in public perceptions, identify demographic shifts, and recognize specific procedures that are becoming increasingly popular.
"First of all, overall interest is growing," says Muslimov. "These platforms are making plastic surgery more familiar and helping break down the negative stereotypes traditionally associated with it. In addition, demographics are changing, and younger people are considering various procedures and increasingly thinking about enhancing their appearance. Finally, we are seeing a direct connection between techniques that trend on TikTok and the procedures patients come to us seeking."
"I think social media platforms are definitely generating interest in many procedures," Muslimov adds. "Submental liposuction and achieving an athletic body shape have become popular topics on social media, as have jawline contouring, breast reduction, and Brazilian butt lifts (BBL)."
"There are many positive aspects," says Miyliyev. "Reconstructive procedures are becoming more widely accepted and accessible. The negative stigma historically associated with them is gradually diminishing. People are now turning to plastic surgery to address concerns they have lived with for years but once believed they simply had to accept."
Reducing negative stigma and making information more widely available have had a positive impact on the field.
However, although online platforms have helped increase awareness of reconstructive procedures, they also present potential risks.
"Without a doubt, access to information has increased, but we need to be careful about who that information comes from," says Muslimov. "Unfortunately, most of the information about plastic surgery available on online platforms does not come from plastic surgeons."
Beyond the wide range of information available on social media, there is also a risk of manipulation, whether through misinformation or altered photographs.
"Unfortunately, some people use social media to manipulate audiences and attract clients," says Muslimov. "We see far too many examples of poorly executed or misleading before-and-after photos that create unrealistic expectations about what surgery can achieve."
Furthermore, because digital platforms are designed to attract clicks and maximize engagement, TikTok often features extreme cosmetic procedures, unfavorable outcomes, and heavily manipulated images.
"Online communities can also contribute to unrealistic expectations about what aesthetic medicine can achieve and what constitutes a normal or good result, particularly because of the use of Photoshop and the publication of edited before-and-after photographs," says Miyliyev.
Most importantly, be cautious about the surgical procedures you see promoted on online platforms, and always prioritize your health and safety!
