Procedures
Breast implant replacement or removal is a surgical procedure performed to replace or remove breast implants. The operation may be carried out either at the patient's request or for medical reasons.
Indications for breast implant replacement or removal
Breast implants have traditionally been recommended for replacement after approximately 10 years. However, not all implants require replacement. Modern implants are manufactured from advanced materials that retain their shape and are designed for long-term use.
Patients may choose to replace or remove their implants for the following reasons:
Poor-quality or damaged implants;
Dissatisfaction with the size or shape of the implants;
Changes in breast shape over time, including implant displacement due to pregnancy, aging, or other factors;
Replacement of older-generation implants;
Capsular contracture (hardening of the tissue surrounding the implant).
Contraindications
As with any surgical procedure, breast implant replacement or removal has certain contraindications, including:
Diabetes mellitus;
Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
Heart, liver, or kidney diseases;
Chronic illnesses;
Cancer.
Before surgery, patients should avoid alcohol, smoking, and blood-thinning medications (only as directed by their physician).
How is the procedure performed?
Before surgery, patients have a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The doctor then prescribes the necessary preoperative examinations, including:
Blood tests;
Breast ultrasound;
Breast MRI.
If the examination results are satisfactory, the patient is scheduled for surgery. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
The surgeon makes carefully planned incisions and removes the implants. If replacement is planned, new implants are inserted during the same operation. If the implants are being permanently removed, the surgeon reshapes the breast to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.
Once the procedure is completed, the incisions are closed with sutures.
The operation usually takes about one hour.
Postoperative care
After surgery, our specialists provide detailed recovery instructions to promote proper healing.
During the recovery period, patients should:
Avoid sports and strenuous physical activity;
Avoid saunas, steam baths, swimming pools, and tanning (including tanning beds);
Attend scheduled follow-up appointments;
Have dressings changed as recommended;
Follow proper incision and wound care instructions.
