Adenotomy is the surgical removal of the adenoids. Located at the back of the nasopharynx, enlarged adenoids can obstruct normal nasal breathing. For this reason, they should be treated or removed in a timely manner. Visiting an ENT specialist early may help avoid surgery in some cases. However, if treatment is delayed, surgical intervention may become necessary.
At Expert Medical Clinic, adenoid removal surgery is performed for children and adolescents.
Why are adenoids important?
Adenoids play a protective role in the body's immune system and are part of the lymphatic ring of the pharynx. Adenoids, also known as hypertrophied pharyngeal tonsils, are not removed simply upon request. The decision to perform adenoid removal is made solely by the physician.
What happens if adenoids are not removed?
Healthy tonsils help protect the body from harmful microorganisms and external factors. However, enlarged and chronically inflamed adenoids can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of respiratory tract infections.
Conditions associated with enlarged adenoids include:
Weakened immune system;
Impaired nasal breathing;
Possible facial asymmetry;
Hearing impairment;
Speech changes;
Frequent diseases of the nose, throat, and respiratory tract;
Hypoxia (oxygen deficiency), which may lead to persistent headaches;
Malocclusion (improper bite).
Indications for Adenoid Removal
The main indications include:
Chronic or recurrent otitis media;
Difficulty breathing through the nose;
Frequent viral respiratory infections;
Malocclusion or other facial asymmetry;
Sleep apnea;
Oxygen deficiency, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue.
Contraindications to Adenotomy
Adenotomy is generally not recommended in the following cases:
Congenital palate abnormalities;
Blood clotting disorders;
Oncological diseases;
Heart and respiratory system disorders;
Inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity;
Acute infectious diseases.
The procedure is also not performed during a cold, acute illness, or when the patient has a high body temperature. Surgery should be postponed until the patient has fully recovered.
