Procedures
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct a deviated nasal septum. It is generally considered a straightforward operation. Unlike rhinoplasty, septoplasty is performed to restore proper nasal breathing, which affects not only the nose but also the overall function of other organs. Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is primarily an aesthetic procedure used to reshape the nose, such as removing a dorsal hump. Причинами плохого носового дыхания могут быть врожденная кривая носовая перегородка либо сломанный нос. Чаще всего обращаются за помощью к лорам именно по причине плохого носового дыхания и не только.
The most common causes of impaired nasal breathing include a congenital deviated septum or a broken nose. Many patients seek the help of an ENT specialist because of difficulty breathing through the nose and related symptoms.
Indications for septoplasty
Septoplasty may be recommended for:
Deviated nasal septum;
Sleep apnea;
Difficulty breathing through the nose;
Chronic sinusitis and rhinitis.
Contraindications
The main contraindications include:
Diabetes mellitus;
Cancer;
Blood clotting disorders;
Liver and kidney diseases.
How is the procedure performed?
Before surgery, the patient must undergo an examination by an ENT specialist and a surgeon. After the consultation, the treating physician will recommend the necessary preoperative tests, including:
Blood glucose test;
ALT/AST;
Complete blood test;
HIV/AIDS test;
Hepatitis screening.
If the test results are satisfactory, the surgery is scheduled. Septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 30 to 90 minutes.
During the procedure, the surgeon removes or repositions the deviated portions of cartilage and bone to restore a straight nasal septum and improve airflow.
