Indications for Conchotomy

Radiofrequency conchotomy may be recommended in the following cases:

• Chronic rhinitis accompanied by hypertrophy (enlargement) of the nasal turbinates;

• Allergic rhinitis causing swelling and enlargement of the nasal turbinates;

• Dysfunction of the nasal turbinates, where their enlargement interferes with normal breathing;

• Turbinate hypertrophy resulting from recurrent infections or chronic inflammation.

Contraindications for conchotomy

The procedure may not be suitable for patients with:

• Blood clotting disorders;

• HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and certain other infectious diseases;

• Diabetes mellitus;

• Oncological (cancerous) diseases.

How is conchoplasty performed?

Conchotomy can be performed under general anesthesia, although it is most commonly carried out under local anesthesia.

During the procedure, a radiofrequency probe is inserted through the nasal passage. High-frequency radio waves are then applied to the tissues of the enlarged nasal turbinates.

The radiofrequency energy reduces the volume of the enlarged turbinates, improving the patency of the nasal passages and restoring normal nasal breathing.

This is a minimally invasive procedure with a relatively short recovery period. To ensure optimal healing, patients should carefully follow all post-operative instructions provided by their physician.

Recovery after conchotomy

Patients typically remain under medical observation at the clinic for 1–2 days before being discharged home.

During the first few days after surgery, it is normal to experience mild discomfort, nasal congestion, and swelling.

Following the procedure, patients should avoid:

• Visiting saunas, steam rooms, or swimming pools;

• Engaging in strenuous physical activity or sports;

• Lifting heavy objects.

Regular follow-up appointments with the treating physician are recommended.

Possible complications include infection, nasal swelling, bleeding, and, in cases of insufficient correction, recurrence of symptoms.
