Indications for tympanoplasty

The procedure may be recommended for patients with:

• Rupture of the eardrum (perforation);

• Chronic inflammation of the middle ear that does not respond to treatment;

• Cholesteatoma (a tumor-like growth);

• Prevention of recurrent middle ear infections;

• Fibrosis of the middle ear;

• Displacement of the auditory ossicles.

Contraindications to Tympanoplasty

Contraindications include:

• Exacerbation of somatic diseases;

• Complete deafness;

• Sepsis;

• Adhesive otitis media;

• Obstruction of the Eustachian tube, including adhesions and scar tissue;

• Allergic diseases;

• Presence of epithelium in the external auditory canal instead of the mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity.

How the procedure is performed

First, an ENT surgeon examines the patient. The doctor then prescribes laboratory tests required for clearance for surgery.

After all the necessary documents and test results have been collected, the patient is prepared for surgery. Either general or local anesthesia is administered, depending on the individual case.

The main stage of treatment then begins: the integrity of the eardrum is restored, and inflamed tissue is removed if necessary.

In some cases, the doctor may use tissue grafts to reconstruct the auditory ossicles or the eardrum.

Recovery after tympanoplasty

After surgery, the patient remains under medical supervision in our day hospital for 1–2 days. Pain may be present during the first few days but gradually subsides as the ear heals.

Follow your treating physician's recommendations for postoperative care. It is especially important to prevent water from entering the ear to reduce the risk of inflammation. Attend all scheduled follow-up examinations throughout the postoperative recovery period.

Possible complications after surgery include infections, bleeding, eardrum perforation, and hearing loss if the desired surgical result cannot be achieved. Careful attention should be paid to the rehabilitation and recovery of the ear.
